Low Carbohydrate Diet Plan

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Even after all the hype with the low carbohydrate diet plan several years ago, it still seems to be and remains very popular. As with any diet, it is important to learn as much about a diet before going in feet first. This means, if you have any health issues, it is a good idea to speak to your physician first. This is especially important if you have heart or kidney problems. In the beginning of this type of diet, it seems easy to accomplish. Then, you realize how limited this diet actually is.

Being on a low carbohydrate diet means the dieter can only eat foods like meat (protein) and some green vegetables like, which are low in carbohydrates, lettuce and spinach. Then, there are vegetables like radishes, herbs, avocado, celery, summer squash, tomatoes, artichokes and many more. It is good to remember that these vegetables do contain fiber. This is something to look up with whatever low carbohydrate diet plan you are following. If your diet uses points, the fiber can be subtracted, or taken away, from the total amount you need to stay within.

For a low carbohydrate fruit snack, these are fruits which can be eaten, in moderation: blackberries and raspberries. These two fruits have the lowest amount of sugar content and make for a better low carbohydrate snack. If on the other hand these fruits are not to your liking, you can eat these fruits: apples, peaches, strawberries, apricots, nectarines and some several other fruits. Again, if these fruits are not to your liking, these fruits can be eaten, but are high in sugar content: pears, plums, oranges, kiwi, pineapple, bananas, grapes and cherries.

Here is what you need to be aware of before changing your diet to lose weight:

One of the main reasons for this type of diet, of course, is the weight loss. It is well known that food which is high in carbohydrates: breads and pastas turn into sugar. This sugar then sits on the belly, hips, legs and arms. The only way to cut down on such fatty foods is to eliminate them for a long period of time. Another reason for going on a low carbohydrate diet is to lower blood glucose levels. Besides eating red meats, fish is also a good protein to add to a low carbohydrate diet. Fish without mercury are usually raised in a fish farm. In fact, fish and shellfish, farm raised, are the best way to purchase and eat fish.

This type of diet is boring. Many people can not go for too long without eating their favorite bread, pasta or sugar foods. Almost everything in the grocery store and in our pantries, consist of something made or filled with carbohydrates. Without carbohydrates, your body will lose the energy needed to give you strength. When carbohydrates are taken away from the daily diet, fat already in the body is used, or taken away, just to keep your body functioning.

Remember, before deciding to go the low carbohydrate diet plan route, consult your physician or a dietician. Your health will depend on you making the right diet decisions.
